The Senior Engineer and IoT Developer has a crucial role in design, development, maintenance, and support of an IoT telematics product. This product collects and dashboards data from diverse company products and customers. The engineer ensures seamless integration of hardware and cloud infrastructure working in multidisciplined

teams. The engineer’s expertise in cloud platforms, programming languages, and electronic engineering is essential for driving the company’s IoT initiatives forward.

 

The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate creativity, commercial grasp, design rigour and self-starting attributes. maxwell+spark fosters a diverse, fast paced, progressive work environment with a multidisciplinary approach to engineering without micro-management. The candidate should have an affinity for such working conditions and be able to rise to the occasion. The role will be based in Durban, South Africa.

 

Role and responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate with other experienced firmware and hardware design engineers
  • Create innovative new designs and features on an IoT telematics system by evolving existing products or creating entirely new products.
  • Provide technical support to field technicians, at times attending in field.
  • Resolving complex challenges and improving system efficiency.
  • Develop automation systems and facilitate efficient execution.
  • Configure dashboards and generate automatic reports per customer requirements.
  • Co-ordinate IoT operations and metrics.
  • Deliver devices by stewarding procurement, production and other departments.
  • Be able to characterize 3rd party machines, components and field environments.
  • Manage users and user experience for internal and external customers.
  • Generate documentation to describe software, electrical, and electronic systems.
  • Lead or participate in testing or certification for new products.
  • Assist in interfacing with hardware production and provisioning processes.
  • Manage mini projects including planning, budgeting, management of other engineers and suppliers.
  • Monitor product data, analyze trends, and provide thought out reports.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) in Electronic Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years’ relevant work experience.
  • Experience in Python, Java, C# programming with a focus on IoT applications.
  • Experience in electronic and PCB design (including microcontrollers) is advantageous.
  • Additional qualifications in data analysis or related courses is advantageous.

Skill Requirements:

  • Hands-on experience with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, GPS and Cellular IOT systems.
  • Proficiency in cloud platforms such as AWS/Azure, ideally within the IoT domain.
  • Interest and understanding of telematics, data gathering and analysis.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Motivated and skilled in electronic testing and reporting.
  • Driver’s license and willingness to travel intermittently.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Familiarity with CAN (Controller Area Network) protocols.
